Gibraltar's Airport

Gibraltar Airport Information
Posted by Andy Pettefer as About Andalucia, Transport

Although Gibraltar is not technically part of Andalucia and Spain, its airport is quite convenient for travellers wishing to visit the western parts of the Costa del Sol and its resorts such as Sotogrande and Estepona. It is also a useful alternative to Jerez Airport for the Costa de la Luz.

After the historic agreement between the governments of Spain, the United Kingdom and Gibraltar, in December 2006, it is hoped that in the near future the airport can be accessed directly from Spain, without travellers having to cross the border into Gibraltar.

Flights to Gibraltar
GB Airways (gbairways.com) currently operate British Airways flights between Gibraltar and London Gatwick although, the recent acquisition of GB Airways by easyJet has cast a doubt over the future of this service. Monarch (flymonarch.com) flies to the ‘Rock’ from London Luton.

Iberian Airlines (Iberia.com) also operates direct flights to Gibraltar from Madrid.

Transport from Gibraltar Airport
The airport is situated around 1.5km from the town centre, just across the border from Spain.

Taxis – A taxi rank is located outside the airport Terminal. Taxis are available for 24 hours a day although there are extra charges at night time, on public holidays. There is also a charge for waiting. If you intend to travel in to Spain, it is advisable to walk across the border and pick up a Spanish taxi in the neighbouring town of La Linea.

Buses – There is a bus stop opposite the airport terminal. The circular number 3 route, operated by the Gibraltar Bus Company, runs from the airport to Europa Point stopping at Main Street, the Rock Hotel and various other places en route. It runs every 15 minutes between 06.25 and 22.00 from Monday to Friday, every 20 minutes from 06.30 to 21.00 on Saturdays, and every 30 minutes from 08.00 until 21.00 on Sundays.

Portillo operates a regular bus service from the nearby town of La Linea to Estepona and San Roque, with an occasional service to Marbella, Fuengirola, Benalmadena Costa, Torremolinos, Malaga and Granada. For full timetable, visit www.ctsa-portillo.es.

Car Hire – Both Budget and Niza have offices at Gibraltar airport. Another option is AurigaCrown Car Hire.

Airport Facilities
Within the airport there is a café, left luggage facility, lost property office (telephone 00 350 73026), bureau de change, and a shop selling items such as newspapers, food, tobacco and alcohol. Once checked in at departures travellers can use the café which has a rooftop terrace offering superb views to the ‘Rock’.
